Ashton-under-Lyne, Donkey Stone Wharf

Entrance to Donkey Stone Wharf.

The Blue plaque tells us the there used to be a mill here called Eli Whalley. They made Donkey Stones (soap sized stones use for scrubbing up doorsteps on old terraced houses).

It's just off Lower Wharf Street, here.

  1. Gee this brings back memories. We used donkey stones (via the rag and bone man) all around the outside of our terraced house in Manchester. I was keen to learn more about Donkey Stone Wharf from yesterday's posting but never put two and two together. Great post. No call for Donkey Stones here on the Gold Coast!

  2. I can just about remember using donkey stones in the early 1960's

In olden days we were very clean.
