Lost in Ashton

Took a bike ride on a cycle route going north from Ashton. Ended up at Park Bridge. I did want to be able to say where I had been. I've attempted to trace the route using various websites, and a real map, but cannot find anything that usefully identifies any cycle routes. The best you get is a vague line drawn through a very blocky map with such little detail it makes it unusable.
So I cycled from possibly somewhere near Smallshaw to Park Bridge.
(Sorry for the blurry pictures, I took the photos while still riding the bike)

  1. It looks a nice route, It's actually signed from the bus station at ashton and goes under the bridge on Wilshaw lane. However i have not tried it yet. Keep meaning to on the way home from work,

  2. It follows the route of the former Ashton to Oldham railway. The cycle/walking route starts at Turner Lane.

  3. Thanks guys. I'll try the route again from the start this time, as I only found it part way along. I was on a random ride and didn't know where I was when I spotted the pathway.

  4. Same thing happens here, sometimes I take my Garmin ETrex Summit just to see where I've been but with the overhead trees I get blank spots. Our city has maps of all bicycle trails which is enormous.

  5. We do it most days , from turner lane, then we usually finish by the pond, with the 2 wooden landings.
You can see the route here http://bit.ly/TBK2w
We deviatite it though , some times we turn left at one of the road crossings, and go down alt hill lane then onto oldham rd,or turn right up alt hill lane , and cycle to the top , then right onto lees rd

  6. Ah, found those two wooden landings today as I made another attempt at the run. Although the cycle signs (route 66) imply you can get to Oldham, I think those two wooden landings are as far as you can get off road?

It is as far as you can go i think, but like i said , you can deviate just before you get to the pond.

  9. I have a similar thing with my c905. It tracks me live (shows on a web site) and also tells me the milage when finish and puts it all on a map. Even posts it to facebook if it wanted too. Pretty good stuff. Shame it drains the battery on the phone.

  10. this bike route is the former railway of the oldham ashton and guide bridge railway company. the future plan is that you will be able to ride to oldham town centre once the funding is made to build a new bridge over the river medlock
